Recently there’s been all these news headlines of Catholic church scandals. All of them have to do with paedophilia, sexual abuse and statutory rape. It isn’t just one or two cases, it is literally hundreds upon hundreds if we include that last few decades and nevermind all the cases that never surfaced and were kept quiet.

I think with the Vatican’s track record, it’s safe to conclude that paedophilia and sexual abuse of children is a part of the culture and always has been.

It seems so strange that priests would destroy the trust that we have placed in them by abusing their parishioner’s particularly the youngest and most vulnerable– our children.

It is not surprising that priests should have nothing better to do than the altar-boys and altar-girls. Look what happened in Nova Scotia, Canada over 20 years ago. It is more about power than it is about sex. Religion is a powerful force to be used for good or evil, as the case may be.

Religion is a force that is generally used for good. Every once in a while, it can be used for evil (the inquisition, the Salem witch trials. As a good Catholic, I am appalled at the behavior of a small minority of our priests. Father Goughain would never do this.
