On Oct. 22 a Brazilian college student named  Geisy Arruda, 20, wore a pink miniskirt to school. Little did she know that  her outfit would make her famous all over the world. To be fair, it wasn’t so much her miniskirt that made her famous. It was her schoolmates’ angry reaction at her style. Or, as her school put it: her disrespect of academic dignity and morality.

According to reports on Brazilian television Arruda, who is a Tourism major, was followed to class by a mob of students who did not approve of her attire. They yelled and screamed to the point that class had to be cancelled and she had to be escorted out by campus police.

Once out of the classroom the situation became even worse. Hundreds, if not thousands, of students followed her and recorded her wit their cellphones calling her a whore, among other insults. She broke down crying.

But, sadly, that’s not the most amazing part of the story. Crowds are known to act like animals on occasion. There’s something about being in groups that lowers people’s intellect exponentially (herd mentality).

The most stupid reaction came from the university itself in a terrible show of sensitivity and, frankly, PR. The school published an advertisement on a local newspaper saying that Arruda had been expelled from the school for being unethical and morally questionable.

Judge for yourselves. This is Arruda wearing the same dress she was wearing on Oct.22.

It isn’t the most stylish look, but it is by no means immoral.

The Brazilian government has stepped in, giving the university administration 10 days to explain Arruda’s expelling. The school had argued that the expelling wasn’t only about the pink dress, but also about her behavior, which has been described as less-than-prudish.

Though the university claims to have punished a few of the students students who were involved in Arruda’s harassment, the truth is that the school as a whole looked terrible to the outside world. Videos of the incident could be seen on YouTube all over the world soon after it took place. And instead of apologizing to Arruda and maybe offering some type psychological or monetary help, the university made matters worse.
