73% Say It’s Likely Goldman Sachs Committed Fraud
Wednesday, April 21, 2010
The federal Securities and Exchange Commission is suing Wall Street mega-firm Goldman Sachs for fraud, and most Americans are pretty convinced they’re guilty. But Americans are evenly divided about whether the timing of the suit was based upon concerns about fraud or a desire to help the Obama administration politically.
A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 39% of Americans believe the government investigation of Goldman Sachs is based on a legitimate concern about fraud.
But 40% say the investigation is an effort to help the government gain more control over the financial industry. Twenty-one percent (21%) more are not sure.
Some people believe that the Obama administration has just announced the Goldman Sachs lawsuit to help push new legislation that would give the government more control over the financial industry. Is the government investigation of Goldman Sachs based on a legitimate concern about fraud or is it an effort to help the government gain more control over the financial industry?
